UNA Campus Hazing Transparency Report
On 1/3/2024, Congress enacted amendments under Section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to require institutions of higher education to disclose hazing incidents and to develop and publish a “Campus Hazing Transparency Report (CHTR)” as specified within the “Stop Campus Hazing Act”.
This report summarizes findings concerning any student organizations, that are established or recognized by the institution, that are found to be in violation and held responsible of violating UNA’s Code of Student Conduct relating to hazing as defined by UNA.
The Stop Campus Hazing Act requires UNA to begin collecting information in respect to hazing incidents beginning 7/1/2025 and to publish and release the initial CHTR findings by 12/23/25 or until UNA has a finding of a hazing violation.
This report will be made publicly available on the UNA website and must be updated biannually and maintained for a period of 5 years from each update. Each year on October 1st, UNA will notify students and employees of the availability of the “Annual Security & Fire Safety Report (ASFSR)” and provide a link to the ASFSR, which will include now include hazing statistics under this law. The CHTR will withhold any personally identifiable information that would reveal any individual student in accordance with section 444 of the “Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act” (FERPA) of 1974.
Alabama State Law also prohibits hazing within educational establishments and classifies hazing offenses as a Class C misdemeanor as defined by Title 13A (AL 16-1-23). No additional information or reporting is required within the CHTR under Alabama law.
The Campus Hazing Transparency Report will include each incident involving a student organization for which a finding of responsibility is issued relating to a hazing violation, including:
- Name of the organization.
- General description of the violation, including:
- Whether the violation involved illegal use of alcohol/drugs;
- The finding of the institution;
- Any sanctions placed on the student organization by the institution.
- Dates of the incident, including:
- Alleged occurrence of incident;
- Initiation of investigation;
- Ending of investigation with a finding of a hazing violation;
- Notification of hazing violation to the student organization.
